Local Scenes (Put Me On to Your Friends’ Music)

I’m lucky to know a bunch of talented musicians here in my beloved Chicago, Illinois, but how will I know about Dayton, Ohio if you don’t tell me? Scranton, Pennsylvania? Tampa, Florida? Rio de Janiero, Brazil? Where y’all at?

I’m asking you to put me on to your friends’ music, in writing form (doesn’t have to be a recorded piece, but if their music is available on DSPs or Bandcamp or wherever, I might try to find it).

Any genre of music, any genre of writing!

Got creative non-fiction about a local hardcore act you’ve seen perform more times than you can count?

Go flash fiction about the misadventures of your homies’ rapper persona?

Got poetry about the best stoned guitar solo your high school buddy ever ripped?

I want it all!

Let’s put together a literary mixtape of the best shit our friends have to offer!

Going along with Major 7th’s usual guidelines, make sure your piece is named after the piece of music you’re writing about. If you’re unsure of a piece’s name— say, if you want to write about a beat your friend played you on their laptop two years ago, or something you witnessed live in a bar with a name that you missed— you could make up a name. Call it whatever feels right. But it’s gotta follow the format of “[Song Title] by Artist.”

And if you’re from the place where Adele is from and you saw her when she was on the come-up— that’s cool, but the more personal, the better. Levels of fame/infamy don’t matter as long as you’re coming from the heart. Same goes for levels of proximity. Next town over, all that. Just go with your gut and send it to me.
